School-to-Work Transition
School's in! And we are very excited about our JOBS 2000 program. This is a unique program that combines the resources of three agencies: the Richmond County Special Education Department, the Georgia Department of Labor, Vocational Rehabilitation Program, and Easter Seals. The program is designed for students with disabilities to achieve their required classroom instruction while gaining employment training in a real workplace environment. The goal is to successfully transition students from the school setting to work. Easter Seals is a Richmond County school site, and we host two classes of special education students. These students are seniors selected from area high schools and receive their instruction (under the guidance of a Richmond County teacher) here at the Easter Seals facility. In addition, each student is assessed by Easter Seals evaluators to determine his or her aptitudes, interests, and skill levels. The student is then placed in our workshop, located on Wrightsboro Road in Augusta, where he or she learns hands-on work skills. Students spend the mornings in class and move to the workshop in the afternoons for hands-on instruction. At the end of their time at Easter Seals, our Job Developer Works with each student to help them find after school jobs or full-time employment following their graduation from school.
This is a great program with documented success. Over 50% of the students going through the program have been helped by Easter Seals to find employment. When students finish the program, they have a real understanding of what it is like to work, they have applicable skills that can be used "on the job," and they have gained the experience they need to take their next step after school.
